"Benicia Alleys and Side Streets"
Benicia, California has been my home since 1985. I've always felt that this charming little city is one of the best kept secrets in the San Francisco Bay Area with its picturesque waterfront, charming buildings, Victorian style homes, and historical landmarks. This series will include paintings of locations in Benicia that you'd have to search for off the beaten path. Charming buildings and alleyways that even the locals might not know exist in our lovely little city.
Benicia Bait &Tackle Shop
Original: $900
Acrylic on Canvas
20" X 24"
Limited Edition giclees are available in various sizes. Plus sets of stationery & postcards.
The first painting in my "Benicia Alleys and Side Streets" series is of the Benicia Bait & Tackle Shop. My current home of 23 years is just a few blocks away from the Benicia Bait & Tackle Shop located on Claverie Way. For many years I had walked and driven by this location and quite frankly had never thought that one day I might paint this building which holds so much local charm. One of the advantages living near the Ninth Street Park and Boat Launch is watching people enjoying themselves windsurfing, kayaking, and sailing, plus seeing the many fishermen launching their boats or fishing off the Ninth Street Pier after a trip to

Peggy Martin Lane
About "Peggy Martin Lane"
Like many Benicia residents I enjoy taking walks up and down First Street enjoying the many quaint shops, restaurants and boutiques. I've done that for many years. However, last January when I decided to paint a "Benicia Alleys and Side Streets" series, was when I discovered the incredibly interesting buildings and fences along Peggy Martin Lane, which is just off of First Street in downtown Benicia.

About “Benicia Poodle”
Over the years I've owned a cute little mutt named Zak, a loving, loyal Great Dane named Sherlock, and an adorable Basset Hound, named Stanley. But because I never owned a poodle, I guess it's not surprising that I had no idea that this little poodle shop just off of First Street even existed. I discovered it one rainy day last January exploring and taking pictures of old buildings on Peggy Martin Lane.
Benicia Poodle is located in the lower back end of the old Peregrine Landing Building and has been designated as a California historical site by a group called the Clampers. The Clampers are members of the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus (ECV), a fraternal organization founded back in the gold rush days. Clampers have been known to plaque places like saloons, bawdy houses, and other locations that have been "overlooked" by more serious historical societies. I have been told that a wonderful woman named Millie owned the poodle shop for many years prior to closing it due to illness several years ago. The site of Benicia Poodle remains empty today, although the building proudly displays the ECV Plaque near its front entrance.
